Vital HEALTH
Mental health isVITAL
in OUR communities
1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. That’s 2,100,000 North Carolinians, and it means you are not alone. We are not alone. VITAL Health is an interdisciplinary interactive art initiative that helps address mental health and social unrest in communities throughout North Carolina using performances, installations and workshops.
Stacey L. Kirby
Stacey L. Kirby is a queer, self-appointed civil servant from North Carolina who creates socially-engaged interactive performance art. For over a decade, Kirby has combined installation and performance to create ‘performative interactions’ in alternative, private and public spaces. Fueled by community-based ethnographic research, her work addresses issues of identity, citizenship and civil rights while empowering the voice within all of us. Since 2005, Kirby has supported her creative practice through therapy, yoga and meditation while continuing to integrate her 200-hr yoga teacher certification through mindfulness practices in her work with performers and the public. Kirby is currently a student of the
Embodied Social Justice program.

Shanti Generation
Shanti Generation invited me to be a part of one of the most diverse teams I have ever been part of. We are working to develop open sourced planning for teachers in the hope we can support them individually and their classes after Collective Trauma imposed by the pandemic and continuous social unrest seeking to level racist policy in the USA.
Shanti Generation was founded in 2009 in response to a need for youth-centric yoga and mindfulness resources. Their programs are informed by decades of fieldwork with youth in schools, community centers and yoga studios.
They merge contemplative practices with a progressive, developmental style of education that meets social, emotional, mental and physical needs of young people and educators. They honor the roots and origins of the yoga practices nurtured in the lands of South Asia including India, Nepal and Tibet.
